About

Musique Royale’s third virtual concert of its 35th Summer Festival features Mi’kmaw singer Michael R. Denny at Government House in Halifax. Michael shares Mi’kmaw songs from hundreds of years ago up until present day, and describes their history in both languages. The concert is released Saturday August 15th at 7:30 pm on YouTube and Facebook, and remains available for two weeks following.

Michael R. Denny is Mi’kmaw from the Eskasoni Mi’kmaw Nation, in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. A father, husband and renown traditional singer, Michael R has traveled and shared his music all over Atlantic Canada and beyond. In 2016, Mike released his debut album “Traditionally Yours: Mi’kmaq Drums, Young and Old”, which was the first of its kind!

Michael R sings traditional Mi’kmaw songs and composes Mi’kmaw powwow songs for his powwow drum group, Stoney Bear Singers. He is passionate about Mi’kmaw songs, dances and language, and their revival.
