About
Musique Royale invites you to our Cookie Concert on Saturday October 4, featuring the Yarmouth Shantymen. The Yarmouth Shantymen set sail in 1984 for a one-time presentation with Eric Ruff, the curator of the Yarmouth County Museum about sea shanties - the work songs that sailors sang aboard the sailing ships that sailed in and out of Yarmouth. Singing made the hard work easier and gave the sailors a rhythm for each task they were required to do. Sometimes the lyrics were salty, often about the things sailors missed when they were at sea.
Over the years they have performed at Folk Harbour Festival, la Fete des Chants des Marins in St. Jean Port Joli, and at the Fundy Sea Shanty Festival. The group is still sharing these songs with the public today. members include two teachers, a nurse, a municipal planner and a retired museum curator. Join Musique Royale at the Lunenburg School of the Arts at 2pm on Saturday October 4th to hear the Yarmouth Shantymen, all ages welcome!
